Start Court is a magistrates court that specialises in working with individuals who have mental health issues and who are facing criminal charges.
Its program helps individuals to get treatment and care for their mental health (and alcohol and other drug use, if applicable) and with community supports (such as accommodation). The individual (and their family / supporters) have access to a dedicated team that includes a magistrate, mental health clinicians, community support coordinators, peer support workers, legal representation, police, and community corrections personnel.
Successful participation in Start Court may be taken into account for sentencing purposes. Additional information is available at https://www.
